Should you reface or replace your kitchen cabinets?

By Post Oak RemodelingUpdated 4 min read

Short answer: Reface or paint if the cabinet boxes are solid, the layout works and you mainly want a new look. Replace if the boxes are damaged by water or termites, the layout doesn’t work, or you want different sizes or an island. A midrange minor kitchen remodel, which includes refacing cabinets and new counters, cost about $28,300 in Houston in 2025 and recouped about 106% at resale.

  • Swollen or delaminated particleboard under the sink

  • You want to move the sink, range or add an island
  • Drawers and hinges that won’t stay adjusted

Common questions

Is refacing worth it?

When the boxes are solid and the layout works, refacing gives a new look for much less than replacement and less disruption. New counters are usually installed at the same time.

Can you put new countertops on old cabinets?

Yes, if the cabinets are level and sound. Stone counters are heavy, so boxes need to be in good condition.
