Pergolas in Houston
A pergola defines an outdoor room with filtered shade and an open sky. We build cedar, aluminum and motorized louvered pergolas on footings designed for Houston clay and storm winds.
Quick answer: A pergola in Houston usually costs $8,000–$18,000 in cedar or treated pine, $10,000–$22,000 in aluminum, and $25,000–$55,000 with a motorized louvered roof that closes against rain. Most are built in 1–2 weeks after permits. A standard open pergola gives partial shade only; if you want rain protection, choose louvers or a patio cover.

Pergolas projects we build
Cedar pergolas
Western red cedar resists rot and insects naturally and takes stain well. It needs resealing every 2–3 years in Houston sun.
Aluminum pergolas
Powder-coated aluminum won’t rot, warp or need staining. A good choice next to pools and for low-maintenance yards.
Louvered roof pergolas
Motorized aluminum louvers open for sun and close tight against rain, with built-in gutters. The closest thing to a patio cover you can open.
Attached pergolas
A pergola attached to the house shades a back door or patio. We fasten it to the framing with a ledger and flashing, not just to the trim.

| Best for | Pool decks, gardens, morning shade | Daily use, fans, TVs, outdoor kitchens |
Getting real shade from a pergola
Rafters alone block only some of the sun. In Houston, add closer-spaced slats, a retractable canopy, shade sails or climbing vines for more. Orient the slats north to south to block more of the low afternoon sun from the west.

Permits
The City of Houston treats pergolas as outdoor improvements that need a permit, and lots in a mapped floodplain also get floodplain review. Electrical work for lights or fans needs its own permit. Many HOAs require architectural approval before a pergola goes up. We prepare the drawings and submittals.
Questions about pergolas
How much does a pergola cost in Houston?
Cedar or treated pine pergolas usually run $8,000–$18,000 installed, aluminum $10,000–$22,000, and motorized louvered roofs $25,000–$55,000, depending on size and extras like lights and fans.
Do I need a permit for a pergola in Houston?
Yes. The City of Houston lists pergolas among the outdoor improvements that need a permit, and lots in a floodplain also get floodplain review. Your HOA may need to approve it first.
Does a pergola protect from rain?
A standard open pergola doesn’t. A louvered roof pergola closes against rain and drains through built-in gutters. If rain protection is the goal, compare it with a patio cover.
What is the best pergola material for Houston?
Aluminum needs the least care in heat and humidity. Cedar looks warmer and resists rot naturally but needs resealing every few years. Untreated pine doesn’t last here.
