Outdoor living in Houston
Patio covers, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, decks, patios and screened porches, designed as one space and built by one team for Houston heat, storms and mosquitoes.
Quick answer: In Houston, outdoor living starts with shade. A patio cover typically costs $18,000–$45,000, an outdoor kitchen $8,000–$60,000, and a deck or new patio $9–$85 per square foot depending on material. Built together with one permit set, a covered outdoor kitchen and patio usually runs $50,000–$110,000.

Planning an outdoor space for Houston
- Shade the west side first. Afternoon sun on the west and south sides is the harshest. Put the deepest cover there, or add a screen wall or shades on the low-sun side.
- Plan for rain. Houston averages about 50 inches a year, often in downpours. Gutters, slope and drains keep water off the patio and away from your foundation.
- Build for wind. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Roofs and pergolas need engineered footings and tied connections.
- Respect the clay. Houston’s expansive soil moves, so slabs need steel and joints, and posts need real footings.
- Keep the bugs out. Fans, screens and good drainage do more against mosquitoes than anything else.
- Check the rules first. Deed restrictions, HOA approval, floodplain status and impervious cover can all shape what you can build.
Build it together, or in phases
Most Houston backyards come together in this order: a bigger patio, a cover over it, then the kitchen and screens. Designing all of it at once, even if you build in phases, means the slab is sized for the roof, the gas and power run before the ceiling closes, and nothing gets torn out later.
Outdoor living questions
What outdoor living project adds the most use in Houston?
A solid patio cover with a ceiling fan. Shade and moving air make a patio usable from spring through fall, and the cover can later hold an outdoor kitchen, TV wall or screens.
How much does a full outdoor living space cost in Houston?
A patio cover, outdoor kitchen and patio extension built together usually runs $50,000–$110,000. Starting with the cover and adding the kitchen later is common; we wire and plumb for it up front so you don’t tear anything out.
Do outdoor living projects need permits in Houston?
Most do. The City of Houston lists patio covers, pergolas, porches and carports as outdoor improvements that need a permit, gas lines and outdoor circuits need trade permits, and lots in a floodplain get extra review. Unincorporated Harris County requires a permit to add a patio or carport. We handle all of it, plus HOA approval.
When is the best time to build outdoors in Houston?
Fall and winter are ideal: dry days for concrete and roofing, and the space is ready for spring. Plan 4–8 weeks ahead for design, HOA review and permits.
Can you build everything at once?
Yes. One team designs the cover, kitchen, patio and screens together, pulls one set of permits and runs the trades in order, which saves time and money compared with hiring separate contractors.
