Upgrades ranked by impact
- Roof: new decking fastened to code, sealed seams and wind- and hail-resistant shingles. Hip roofs handle wind better than gables.
- Openings: impact-rated windows and doors, or storm shutters, keep wind out of the house.
- Garage door: a wind-rated garage door keeps the largest opening from failing.
- Standby generator: a permanently installed natural-gas generator with a transfer switch keeps AC and refrigerators running.
- Drainage: gutters, grading and drains keep heavy rain away from the slab.
- Connections: hurricane ties on patio covers, porches and additions.
Windstorm inspections
The Texas Department of Insurance requires windstorm inspections for most new construction, roof replacements and structural alterations in the 14 coastal counties and parts of Harris County east of Highway 146. The resulting certificate (WPI-8) is usually needed to buy a policy from the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association.
Common questions
Can my HOA stop me from installing a generator?
Generally not. Texas Property Code § 202.019 protects permanently installed standby generators, though HOAs can regulate location, screening and installation.
Does Houston require a windstorm inspection?
