Permits & rules

Do you need a permit to build a fence in Houston?

By Post Oak RemodelingUpdated 3 min read

Short answer: Inside the City of Houston, a residential fence needs a permit if it is over 8 feet tall, or if it is built wholly or partly of masonry or concrete at any height. Permit processing takes about 10 days and includes plan review and inspection. A standard 6-foot wood fence usually doesn’t need a city permit, but deed restrictions and HOAs often limit height, style and placement.
