How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Houston?

By Post Oak RemodelingUpdated 5 min read

Short answer: Most Houston bathroom remodels cost $15,000–$30,000 for a guest bath and $35,000–$80,000 for a primary bath, and a tub-to-shower conversion usually runs $9,000–$18,000. Remodeling magazine’s 2025 Cost vs Value report puts a midrange Houston bath remodel at $23,503 and an upscale one at $75,005.

Houston bathroom remodel cost by scope

Tub-to-shower conversionNew pan, valve, waterproofing, tile and glass$9,000–$18,000
Guest bath remodelTub or shower, vanity, toilet, tile floor$15,000–$30,000
Primary bath remodelLarger shower, double vanity, layout changes$35,000–$80,000
Accessible bathroomCurbless shower, bench, grab bars$25,000–$50,000

What drives the price

  • Moving drains. On a slab, relocating a toilet or shower means cutting and re-pouring concrete.
  • Shower size and tile. Large walk-in showers, niches, benches and frameless glass add labor and material.
  • Waterproofing. A continuous membrane and a flood test cost more up front and prevent the leaks that cause mold in Houston humidity.
  • Curbless showers. On a slab, the floor often has to be recessed to get a flat entry.

Common questions

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

Most take 3–6 weeks of construction after the permit. A tub-to-shower conversion can be faster; a primary bath with layout changes takes longer.

Is a tub-to-shower conversion worth it?

Often, especially for aging in place. Keep at least one tub in the house if you have young children or expect family buyers to want one.

Why are some quotes so much cheaper?

Low quotes often skip the permit, the waterproofing membrane or licensed plumbers. Ask each contractor exactly how they waterproof the shower.
